The Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test (IMU-CET) is a mandatory all-India exam required to join undergraduate maritime programs like DNS (Diploma in Nautical Science), B.Sc Nautical Science, and B.Tech Marine Engineering. Anyone aspiring to join the Merchant Navy as an officer must clear this exam.

In the Merchant Navy, a sponsorship is a pre-placement offer given by a shipping company before you start your maritime college training. It guarantees that after completing your 1-year pre-sea course (like DNS), the company will take you onboard their ships for your mandatory sea-time training.

You do not need a sponsorship to appear for the IMU-CET. However, to take admission into the highly preferred DNS (Diploma in Nautical Science) program, having a sponsorship letter from a Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) approved company is strictly mandatory.

While criteria can vary slightly by program, the standard baseline is:

  • Academics: 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) with a minimum aggregate of 60%.

  • English: At least 50% marks in English in either Class 10 or Class 12.

  • Age: Generally between 17 to 25 years at the time of course commencement (age relaxations apply for reserved categories).

This depends on the department you are choosing:

  • Deck Cadets (DNS/B.Sc): Strict vision standards apply. You generally need 6/6 vision in both eyes without glasses.

  • Engine Cadets (B.Tech): Slight visual corrections (glasses) are permitted up to a certain limit.

  • Note: Color blindness is strictly prohibited across all departments in the Merchant Navy.

Absolutely. The maritime industry actively encourages female cadets. The academic, physical, and medical criteria remain the same, and many shipping companies, as well as IMU campuses, offer special scholarships and fee waivers to support female seafarers.
