How Does Merchant Navy Admission Work?
Admission depends on the course you choose. Different pathways such as B.Sc. Nautical Science, B.Tech Marine Engineering, DNS and other maritime programmes can have different academic, medical, entrance and selection requirements.
For IMU UG programmes such as B.Tech, B.Sc. and DNS, the current IMU prospectus specifies IMU-CET as the relevant entrance test. Candidates who qualify receive a rank and then follow the applicable admission or counselling process.
DNS admission through IMU-affiliated institutes has an additional sponsorship requirement under the current 2026–27 rules.

ETO
ETO follows a specialised maritime training pathway for eligible Electrical and Electronics-related qualifications, subject to current DG Shipping requirements.
GME / PGDME

Medical Fitness — An Important Admission Stage
Candidates applying for marine programmes must satisfy the applicable DG Shipping medical fitness standards. IMU states that candidates selected for marine programmes such as B.Tech Marine Engineering, B.Sc. Nautical Science, DNS and PGDME must submit the prescribed physical fitness certificate issued by a DG Shipping-approved doctor. Eye-sight and other applicable medical conditions should be checked before committing to a maritime course.
Special Note for DNS Applicants
The current IMU 2026–27 prospectus states that admission to DNS programmes in affiliated institutes is open only to sponsored candidates who qualify in IMU-CET for UG programmes. Therefore, DNS applicants should understand both the IMU-CET requirement and the sponsorship-selection process before applying.
